Learn Spanish by Speaking: Overcoming Shyness, Fear, and the Awkward Moments

If you’ve ever tried to learn Spanish by speaking, you already know the truth: speaking is the scariest part of language learning. Most of us aren’t afraid of reading, listening, or doing worksheets… but when it comes to actually opening our mouths? Suddenly we feel shy, insecure, and terrified of sounding stupid.

Trust me — that is 100% me.

Why We’re So Afraid to Speak

Most people learning a new language worry about:

  • making mistakes
  • being judged
  • sounding silly
  • forgetting words mid-sentence
  • or getting that “I can’t believe you said it like that” look

It’s totally normal. Our brains are wired to protect us from embarrassment — even when no one around us actually cares.

Speaking Is the Fastest Way to Learn (Even If It Feels Awkward)

The truth is, speaking really is the fastest way to learn Spanish. You can read books, study apps, and watch all the YouTube lessons… but your brain doesn’t fully switch into Spanish mode until you actually speak.

Speaking helps you:

  • recall vocabulary faster
  • form sentences naturally
  • think in Spanish
  • build real confidence

It’s uncomfortable, but it works.

Find Someone You Feel Comfortable With

The most important part of learning Spanish through conversation is finding someone you feel safe and comfortable with. Someone patient. Someone who won’t judge your accent, grammar mistakes, or those moments where your mind suddenly goes blank.

A kind native speaker makes all the difference.

A lot of people say, “Just date someone who speaks the language!”
Well… I tried that.

The Boyfriend Speaking Method (AKA: Didn’t Work for Me lol)

Everyone always suggests:
“Get a Spanish-speaking boyfriend! It’s the best way to practise!”

Yeah… no. That didn’t work for me.

He just wants to speak English.
And even though I know I could speak Spanish to him and he could answer in English… it just feels weird. It doesn’t flow. It doesn’t feel natural. So that whole strategy is not for everyone.

My Pet Peeve: Rude People Who Judge Your Effort

Let’s talk about this because it drives me absolutely crazy.

I cannot stand people who give dirty looks when you’re trying to speak their language. Like seriously… who do they think they are?

You’re learning. You’re trying. You’re doing something brave.

There’s a quote I love by Amy Chua:
“Do you know what a foreign accent is? It’s a sign of bravery.”

And it’s true. An accent means you’re showing up, trying, learning, pushing through fear, and choosing growth over comfort. It means you’re actually doing the work.

And then there’s the other type of rude person — the one who snaps at you with that impatient tone:
“If you want to learn Spanish, you have to speak.”

Like… thank you, Captain Obvious.
As if saying it in a rude, condescending tone will magically give me confidence…..arshole.
That kind of attitude doesn’t motivate anyone — it shuts people down.

If someone wants you to speak, they should make you feel safe, not embarrassed.

How Preply Helped Me Start Speaking Spanish Comfortably

Here’s the funny thing: I teach English online, and a lot of my students living in Australia still choose to practise conversation with me online instead of speaking with people around them — simply because they feel more comfortable and less judged.

That actually gave me the idea to join Preply for my Spanish.

Even though I live in Costa Rica, I can still have conversation practice with Spanish speakers from all over the world. That’s where I met Betsabé from Venezuela — and honestly, we became instant friends. She basically became my Spanish-speaking therapist lol. I felt so safe and relaxed speaking with her.

The great thing about Preply is that each tutor sets their own hourly rate, and some start as low as $4 USD per hour, making it super affordable for regular practice.

And when you find someone you vibe with, speaking Spanish becomes easy. Fun. Natural. And way less scary.

Speak Anyway. Speak Often. Speak Proudly.

Even if:

  • your voice shakes
  • you forget basic words
  • you mix tenses
  • someone rolls their eyes (ugh)
  • you feel awkward

Speak anyway.

Every single conversation counts. Every mistake is progress. Every awkward moment makes you braver.
